Copyright & Takedown Policy

CharacterDex hosts user-submitted images and comments. If you believe something here infringes your copyright, here's how a takedown notice works and what happens next.

Filing a takedown notice

A compliant notice under 17 U.S.C. §512(c)(3) includes: (1) a signature of the person authorized to act for the copyright owner; (2) identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed; (3) identification of the infringing material and its location on CharacterDex; (4) your contact information; (5) a statement of your good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized; (6) a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and you're authorized to act. What happens after a valid notice

We remove or disable access to the identified content, log the notice, and notify the uploader with instructions for filing a counter-notice. A strike is recorded against the uploader's account.

Filing a counter-notice

If you believe your content was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may file a counter-notice under §512(g)(3): your signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared before removal; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification; your name, address, and phone number; and your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district (or, if outside the U.S., any district where CharacterDex may be found), and that you'll accept service of process from the person who filed the original notice. We forward valid counter-notices to the original complainant; unless they notify us of a filed court action, we restore the content after 10–14 business days.

Repeat-infringer policy

Under §512(i), accounts that accumulate repeated valid takedown notices against them are terminated.

Designated agent

CharacterDex will register a DMCA designated agent with the U.S. Copyright Office before opening uploads to the public; the agent's contact details will be published here once registered.
